9/9/15

During social studies, students engaged in activities pertaining to compass directions and the hemispheres. I was also able to talk with some of the students about history topics that they have interest in learning about. I think this will be an informative and enjoyable year for the fifth grade in social studies.

Members of 312 took their beginning of the year assessment during math class. This piece of work will give me an important glimpse into where students stand as we begin our work in math. Tomorrow, grade 5 will turn our attention to the first lesson of unit 1.

Finally, during our ELA learning block, students were able to write in their writer's notebook about an important event that they had over the summer. I enjoyed getting to hear the students share some of their pieces with the class.

Homework

Introducing You worksheet, please fill out and pass in by Friday

Writer's notebook - by Tuesday of next week, I would like all of the students in room 312 to personalize their writer's notebooks. I really want students to take pride in their pieces of writing and make it their own. This arts and crafts component will help in that regard. As an example, here is my writer's notebook.

I would also like all students to make an attempt to log into their kidblog site while at home. This important site will be home to the students writing during the year. If there is any trouble, please let me know.

9/8/15

I enjoyed getting to meet the new members of room 312. I am a big believer in first impressions, and the fifth graders made a positive one on me today. Students spent the day getting familiar with one another and the day-to-day workings of the fifth grade.

The fifth graders also went on a scavenger hunt today. Students were tasked with finding classmates who met certain criteria. This was an enjoyable activity that the class seemed to enjoy.

To close this first day back, members of room 312 worked to design puzzle pieces which expressed their positive attributes and interests. These puzzle pieces will be displayed in the classroom over the first few weeks of school.

Tomorrow, we will begin our first math unit and will start to talk about the reading expectations of fifth grade.

I hope everyone has a nice night.

6/24/15

Students received a copy of their yearbook today and were able to get together with Mrs. Armstrong's class to sign each other's books. As an additional treat, an ice cream truck also arrived later in the day. These last few days have been a real enjoyable time for fifth grade. I wanted to take the time to thank all the parent volunteers who have donated their time and effort to the fifth grade over the course of the last few days. It has been noticed and greatly appreciated.

I will see everyone tomorrow for the last day of school.

6/23/15

After taking a field trip to George's Island yesterday, the fifth grade had their field day today. Students were able to participate in a number of different activities and had a lot of fun.

I also want to compliment the fifth grade on their throwing arms, as I ended up in the water of the dunk tank a number of times.

I will see everyone tomorrow for our last full day together.

6/19/15

Today, students participated in a mystery bag activity. The fifth grade class each brought in a bag that contained some items of personal significance for each student. After the items were taking out of the bag, the other classmates had to attempt to guess which bag belonged to which student. After the correct answer was determined, the student who brought in the bag would explain why each item was important to them. I thought this went very well and I hope that the members of 312 enjoyed this.

Once again, I want to congratulate the fifth grade class for their flexibility and hard work during this hectic week. I was very happy for them on their big day yesterday.

I hope everyone has a nice weekend and I look forward to the field trip on Monday.
